Invictus

Since this month is the football World Cup in the nation of South Africa...I thought it would be appropriate to watch Clint Eastwoods inspiring film Invictus...Based on the true story of South Africas 1995 world cup rugby champions...Clint tells how one of the most important political figures of our generation Nelson Mendella inspired and untied his nation...Matt Damon losses the weight he gained to play the Mark Whitacre in The Informant and packed on the muscle to play captain of the rugby team Francois Pienaar...I believe when asked who he'd like to see play him on film Mendella thought Morgan Freeman could pull it off... Mendella got his wish and Freeman channels the great leader...Even though I still don't understand the sport of rugby Eastwood made a really great uplifting film...It's nice to see a film about South Africa with out it ending on a sad note...

Gamer

Gamer is another one of those sci/fi thrillers in witch a death row inmate can win their freedom if he or she completes a suicidal mission for the entertainment of the public...This time the game is a P.O.V. 3rd person shooter type video game where the prisoner is controlled by another gamer...Gerard Butler plays our hero Kable he is the most successful warrior on Slayers with only 3 more missions to win his freedom...Michael C. Hall of Dexter fame plays an all out villain in Gamer he's the inventor of Slayer and Society which is an interactive simm universe... Much like The Simms game Society is a bawdy place where you can create an alter ego, but in this movie they are actually controlling real people/actors...Kables wife is one of these actors and of course shes suffering at the hands of an obese pervert who puts her in tasteless situations...Will Kable win his Freedom and safe his wife and daughter??? I thought Gamer was fun for what it was...Running man meets Rollerball meets Deathrace...There isn't anything new to see here but I had fun seeing it...I blame Society see in that universe there's lots of sexy topless babes... Who's going to be the first to make a porno parody based on the Simms games...Who ever it is should get there art direction inspiration from Gamers Society

Inglourious Basterds

Tarantino's WWII epic sat on my netflix queue forever..I was so excited when it finally came...Oh and it started out to be so good...The first scene we get to meet Christoph Waltz's(he deserved his best supporting actor Oscar) character S.S. Colonel Hans(The Jew Hunter) Landa...This scene has the scope and Beauty of a Leone spaghetti western...When that scene was over I felt that Quentin maybe on to something...The Kentuckian Lt. Aldo Raines played over the top by Brad Pitt is the Lee Marvin type leader of the Basterds...A rag tag commando unit made up of Jewish American soldiers there goal is to Kill Nazis and bring Pitt there scalps...What disappointed me about the basterds was all the little grind house tricks that Tarantino throws in like 70's Style text when introducing sadistic Nazi killer Sgt. Hogo Stiglitz..I could of done with out all the text...I didn't think we needed the Samuel Jackson voice over either ...I also thought the David Bowie song wasn't appropriate for the soundtrack...I usually love me a Tarantino soundtrack too....These are minor complaints..Someday Tarantino is going to make his big boy movie...He almost did with Basterds

Tideland

A.O. Scott critic for the New York Times while guest appearing on Ebert And Ropper called Tideland "...Creepy,Exploitative, And Self-Indulgent..."...That's according to the Wikipedia...Terry Gilliams film is creepy, exploitative, and whats so wrong about self-indulgence....The disclaimer on the DVD by Gilliam which is featured below sets up the films uncomfortable parts ...So its Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Alice in Wonderland thank you Terry...Based on the unread novel by Mitch Cullin... Tideland is disturbing in the David Lynch kind of way...Jodelle Ferland is the young heroin who has to deal with the drug of the same name...Her mom played by Jennifer Tilly channeling Courtney Love dies of an O.D....Her dad Played by Jeff Bridges... In this film the Dude does not abide he just dies...Janet McTeer is frighting ...Brendan Flecther witch is the second reference to this blog in this review...Is awesome as Dickens...The best since DiCaprio in Gilbert Grape...
